MissionHabitat for Humanity Buffalo establishes partnerships among God's people to give a helping hand to families who otherwise would be unable to achieve their dream of ownership of a simple decent house in a safe environment.
Habitat for Humanity Buffalo (as of September, 2011)
- Founded: 1985.
- Built 25th home in 1994, 50th home in 1998, 75th home in 2000, 100th home in 2002, 150th home in 2005, 200th home in 2009.
- Dedicated 218th and 219th homes in August 2011.
- Provide home ownership for 923 people including 604 children .
- 60 families are currently working toward sweat equity qualification of 150 hours.
- 90 cents of every dollar spent goes to construction.
- Built on the East, West, North and South sides of Buffalo and the City of Lackawanna.
- Owners must complete 500 hours of sweat equity before owning home.
- Habitat Buffalo ReStores - Retail operation for used and discounted construction materials and home furnishings. The North store was established in 2005, the South store opened in 2010. Both locations provide another funding stream for house construction. Phone: 852-6607. Locations: North store, 501 Amherst Street (next to Wegman's) and South store, 1675 South Park (corner of Koester).
- Cost of homes: Rehab: $45,000 - $60,000, 6,000 labor hours; New: $80,000 - $90,000, 4,000 labor hours.
- Re-habs get new heating, plumbing and electrical systems, new windows, siding, roofs, insulation, interiors.
- Building lots sold to Habitat by the City of Buffalo for $1.
