Habitat Buffalo builds safe, decent, energy-efficient homes in the City of Buffalo. Before applying to Habitat Buffalo’s homebuyer program, please consider the following:

Income Guidelines

Approved homeowners repay an affordable, 30-year mortgage. Habitat Buffalo considers applicants’ credit, debt-to-income ratio, and financial history.

Sweat Equity
“Sweat equity” is a term used to describe work completed by homebuyers towards the purchase of their home. Once approved, homebuyers are required to complete at least 400 hours of “sweat equity”.  “Sweat equity” may include time spent on a construction site, shifts worked at one of Habitat Buffalo’s ReStore locations, and participation in the required budgeting and homeownership classes each homebuyer must complete.

Home Selection
Habitat Buffalo builds and rehabs homes primarily on the East Side of the City of Buffalo. A family may refuse a home twice without penalty, but repeated refusals may result in long wait times and/or removal from the program.

Families with special needs (such as wheelchair ramps, step-in showers, etc.) have an opportunity to request modifications to be made to their home at the time of application acceptance.

Habitat Buffalo cannot guarantee the location of available homes.

Required Documentation

Applicants for Habitat Buffalo’s homebuyer program are required to complete an application and to submit a copy of:

  • 30 days worth of recent pay stubs
  • 2017 and 2018 1040
  • 2017 and 2018 W-2
  • Social benefits documentation (SSI, SSD, TANF, SNAP, etc.)
